Colin Johnson studied at The College of Arts and Technology in 1969 in Science. Since then has completed a part time ceramics course and in 2005 attended at Hastings College of Arts and Technology and achieved a diploma in Art & Design.

From 1988 to date Colin has exhibited locally to where he lives in Sussex and had publications in the following; ‘500 Pitchers' a book published in 2006 and also in the same series of books in 2007 ‘500 Tiles'.

I like to work with the effects of light on form, texture and colour. My medium is usually ceramic. I am inspired by the art and architecture of ancient cultures and that of more recent times for example, the work of Gaudi and contemporary architects like Foster.

Many different types of clay and techniques are employed to achieve the desired result. For example, with ‘Pods', the individual elements are slip-cast using bone china, then fired virtually to melting point achieving the maximum translucency, allowing the internal lights to shine through.

Two things I associate with Christmas are spicy oranges, hanging from a Christmas tree and sparkling Christmas lights, both of which create a particular ambience at this special time of year.

One of my pieces ‘Quadron', is shaped like a quarter of an orange, which is illuminated from within, highlighting beautiful shapes and textures. My colour-changing ‘Moonflower' panels also create an ambient ever-changing light, which is subtle, graceful and meditative.
